Wildlife in West Bengal
In both of its southern and northern sides, West Bengal has rich forestlands, which are replete with rare animals like wild elephants, one-horn-rhinos and so on. But the paramount of all tourist attractions in West Bengal is the Royal Bengal Tiger, which is found only in the large mangrove forest of renowned Sunderbans in the southern Bengal. Located in the Ganga delta in West Bengal, Sunderban covers a vast stretch of mangrove swamp, lush forested islands and small rivers near the Bay of Bengal. Other wildlife destinations in West Bengal are the sanctuaries of Dooars and Jaldapara.
Sundarban :
Sundarban the largest prograding delta in the whole world, comprises of 10,200 sq km of Mangrove Forest, spread over India (4200 sq km of Reserved Forest ) and Bangladesh (6000 sq km approx of Reserved Forest ) and is also the widest Mangrove Forest in the world. Another 5400 sq km of non-forest, inhabited region in India, along the north and north-western fringe of mangrove forest, is also known as Sundarban region in India . Hence, the total area of Sundarban region in India is 9600 sq km which constitutes the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve. Indian Sundarban is bound on the west by river Muriganga and on the east by rivers Harinbhahga and Raimangal. Other major rivers flowing through this eco-system are Saptamukhi, Thakuran, Matla and Goasaba. Renowned in the world Sunderban is inhabited by Royal Bengal Tigers is not far away from Calcutta. You can explore varied and unknown wildlife of Sunderbans which includes jungle cats, fishing cats, Axis deer, wild boar, Rhesus monkeys, mongooses and the largest estuarine crocodiles in the world.
How to Reach Sunderban
Come to Sajnekhali by motorboat departing from Canning which is easily and conveniently accessible by regular train and bus services from Calcutta. Cruise along in M.V. Chitrarekha (weekly journey from October to March) for a life time experience. One can also get private boats from Canning, Gosaba and Basanti, Raidighi, Basanti, Namkhana and Najatare are all well connected by roadways from Calcutta.
