WEST BENGAL TRAVEL - Introduction
West Bengal, a scenic state in east India, stretches from Himalayas in the north to Bay of Bengal in the south. Also called “the City of Joy”, it is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse states of India. The submerged paddy stretches, exotic green plains, scenic beauty and diversity, beautiful beaches and sea resorts, dense verdant forests, historic monuments, diverse wildlife, and pacific hills of West Bengal, have given birth to many world renowned poets, artists, thinkers and political activists. The land of social crusaders, West Bengal has played a crucial role during the India's Struggle for Freedom. The region also commands a mention in the great epic Mahabharata as 'Vanga'. Controlled and ruled by the Maurya kings in the 3rd century and Pala rulers at a later period, it was in West Bengal that the British Colonial Government decided to set up their capital.

The agriculture of West Bengal mainly constitutes of crops such as rice, maize, pulses, oil seeds, wheat, barley, potatoes and vegetables. Its capital Kolkatta is a magnificent historic city and the major hub for the Information Technology. Real estate, financial consultancies, travel and tourism and hotel industry are some other services that contribute to the state economy.
