Tourist Attractions in Tripura



Situated in the remote northeast green hills of India, Tripura has numerous impressive scenic secrets that India can offer to the global tourists. Whereas lofty mist clad hills dominates the landscape of other northeastern states, the rolling verdant valleys of Tripura are alluring enough to entice you obsessively.

The tiny Tripura offers an enthralling blend of tourist attractions:

Agartala :
Agartala and Udaipur are most alluring cities of Tripura, located 55 Km away.  Set quite close to the neighbouring country of Bangladesh, Agartala is the capital of Tripura and is immensely rich in flora & fauna, architectural and historic palaces, temples, etc , and is the legendary state of Tripura.  Agartala in Tripura is a laid back administrative centre, gained prominence when Maharaja Krishna Manikya shifted his capital here in the 19th century. This market town for rice, tea, jute, and oilseed, is the commercial center of the region surrounding it.

Ujjayanta Palace is the most prominent and renowned tourist attraction in Agartala. The second most attraction is the Kunjaban Palace, prominent equally, and located just one Km north of the prime attraction. The capital city Agartala is also the home to State Museum, Tribal Museum, a number of temples and Buddhist sites.

UjjayantaPalace :
This is the most prominent of all tourist attractions in Agartala, built by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya in 1901 AD. Once the royal residence of the Manikya Kings, the palace boasts of a magnificent Indo-Saracenic architecture. It is a two-storeyed mansion, with 28 hectares of parkland, and now occupies the office of the State Legislative Assembly. In the grounds, there are two temples - Umanneshwar and Jagganath - both of which are ochre in colour. Huge Mughal style gardens, magnificent tile floor, beautiful ceilings and doors of curved wood, etc. add extra allure and luster to the celestial beauty of the palace.

KunjabanPalace :
Another major place of attraction in Agartala is the royal Kunjaban Palace built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. It is situated at a distance of 1 km north of the Ujjayanta Palace on a green hillock. The grand Palace is the official residence of the Governor of Tripura. The southern part of the Palace is open to the public and has been named as Rabindra Kanan. Perched on a verdant hillock, this palace was once the most favourite resort of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore in Tripurathe. Its scenic locality inspired him enough to compose many of his famous songs here.

StateMuseum :
This museum showcases some rare images, epigraphs found at the archaeological sites.

Pilak & Venuban Vihara :
The state also has numerous Buddhist sites, which are significant tourist attractions in Tripura. The sites speak for the spread of Buddhist religion in this part of India in the long past. Actually Buddhism crossed this region while getting a stronghold in Burma. Pilak houses colossal stone images Hindu and Buddhist faith like: Avolokiteshwar and Narasimha. Venuban Vihara preserves some beautiful metal idols of Lord Buddha and Bodhisatva, which are actually of Burmese origin.

Unakoti:
The site lies a little away from Agartala. This is a famous tourist place where you would find numerous rock carvings, murals with their primitive rustic beauty. All the carvings trace their origin in the Hindu mythology. Green vegetation and serene surroundings around adds to the great charm of the place.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary:
This is a short excursion away from Agartala. In the dense verdant jungle punctuated by hilly landscapes, you can spot the rare of spectacled monkey, deer and as many as 150 species of birds in this Wildlife Sanctuary--- abundant in diverse flora and fauna.

Neermahal
Palace :
Located about 55 km from Agartala is Neermahal, Tripura's one of major tourist destinations. It is an elegant and tranquil summer resort built aesthetically in the middle of a lake named Rudrasagar, with a total area of about 5.35 sq km. It is the only lake palace in Eastern part of India and is built in a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles.

Journey to Agartala


Airport - Agartala is well connected by  regular flights to Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi.

Railheads - The two closest railway stations are Kumarghat (160 km) and Dharama Nagar (200 km), both the stations being on the North-East Frontier Railway, connected with Lumding & Guwahati, where as Lumding and Guwahati are well-connected with Kolkata and other major stations in India.

Road Transport - Good motorable raods connect Agartala with Silchar- 288 km, Guwahati 599 km, Shillong 499 km, Dharmanagar- 200 km. Tripura Road Transport Corporation buses connect Silchar, Shillong and Dharma Nagar to Agartala.

Staying in Agartala :
Agartala has a moderate but decent range of hotels. The accommodations at Agartala are of the mid-range category commonly designed for every traveler coming to Agartala. All places are comfortably made for the tourists from all over. Choice of eating places is limited - your hotel is the obvious and most convenient place.
