Trichy Travel | Trichy Travel Guide

Tiruchirappalli now called Trichy is situated on the banks of the Cauvery river. Trichy, the fourth largest city in the state was a citadel of the early Cholas which later fell to the Pallavas.

But the Pallavas never really managed to retain control of this strategic city and lost it to the Pandyas several times.

The struggle for power between the Pallavas and Pandyas continued till 10th centuryas the Cholas asserted and assumed the reigns until the deadline of the century.

When this empire collapsed in 1565, Trichy came to be under the rule of the Nayaks of Madurai, the Marathas, the Nawabs of Carnatic, the French and finally the British.

But it was under the Nayaks of Madurai that Trichy prospered in its own right and grew to be the city that it is today.

The city is a fine blend of the traditions and modern and is built around the Rock Fort. Apart from the fort there are several churches, colleges and missions dating back to the 1760s.

With excellent infrastructure facilities Trichy is a good base to see east-central TamilNadu.

Rock Fort Temple - This temple complex built by the Pallavas houses three temples carved out of a rock mountain.

The three temples are the Manikka Vinayakar temple at the foot hills, the Uchhi Pillayar Koyil atop the hill and the Taayumaanavar Koyil Shivastalam amidst the hill. Built by the Pallavas and substantially constructed by Nayaks, this Rock Fort stands on a huge 83 m high rock and is devoted to Lord Shiva as Kangaala Moorthy.

» Srirangam - 10 km from Trichy, this is a picturesque island ringed by the river Cauvery and also a fascinating temple town. This superb Sri Ranganathaswami Temple complex is probably the largest in India.

This Sreerangam temple has 21 magnificent towers which were built around the 13th and 14th centuries and is surrounded by seven walls.

Mohini Alangaram, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Garuda Seva, Flower Festival and the Car Festival during the last week of December and first week of January are the important festivals of Srirangam.

» Jambukeshwar Temple - This temple is an important Shiva temple which is architecturally interesting and has elaborate carvings. The temple is devoted to Shiva lingam which is submerged in water coming from a spring in the sanctum.

» Alagia Manavalan Temple - This is the Divya Desam Vishnu temple. Being located 2 km northwest of Trichy, it is also the birth place of Tiruppaana Alwar.
