SIKKIM TRAVEL - Introduction
Sikkim is the second smallest but one of the most scenic and enthralling states of India. This landlocked state is least populated and is known for its mountainous landscape, Buddhist monasteries and ecological richness. This north eastern state of India is surrounded by Nepal in the west, China to its north and east, Bhutan to the south-west and West Bengal in its south.
It is located in the shadows of the world's third highest peak, Kanchenjunga. The state has twenty-eight mountain peaks, twenty-one glaciers, 227 high altitude lakes, five hot springs, and over 100 rivers and streams, including the famous Teesta , which is also called “lifeline of Sikkim”. Often admired as the "Switzerland of the East", Sikkim is a land of immense scenic beauty and natural charm with its imposing snow capped mountain peaks, dark green deep and dense forest cover, calm and tranquil lakes, a multitude of flowers and a large variety of wildlife.
Adventure tourism and nature tourism are on the rise in Sikkim. There are quite a few wildlife parks in the region and the most popular among these is the KanchenjungaNational Park. Sikkim is quite popular among adventure enthusiasts for different adventure activities like trekking, mountaineering, river rafting etc.
