It is believed that in the 6th century BC, Prince Gautam visited Vaishali and Rajgir, before reaching Bodhgaya where he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree.

Bihar was the first centre of Buddhism in North India and the major events of Buddha's took place here, so the regions close to Patna draw Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world.
